Volleyball roundup: Orange Beach claims Foley Labor Day Classic

Daphne, Bayside Academy also win respective brackets in tournament play

Posted

On the hardwood, local volleyball teams were busy in tournament action last weekend where the Orange Beach Makos, Daphne Trojans and Bayside Academy Admirals won their brackets.

The Gulf Shores Dolphins and Spanish Fort Toros each earned five-win weeks and the Fairhope Pirates and St. Michael Catholic Cardinals grabbed a tournament win.

At the Labor Day Classic in Foley, Orange Beach bounced back from its first regular-season loss to Spanish Fort in non-region play with six consecutive wins to claim the gold bracket. Amelia Edgeworth was named tournament MVP and both Leyni Young and Ensley Keel were named to the all-tournament team.

It was nearly Gulf Shores that won the gold bracket but the Dolphins fell to the Makos in the semifinal match of the gold bracket to finish 5-1 in the tournament. Gulf Shores earned wins over Bluff, Bozeman (FL), Cedar Mountain, Crestview (FL), and Daphne.

The Daphne Trojans bounced back from their losses to Gulf Shores and Navarre (FL) to win the silver bracket at Foley’s Labor Day Classic. Daphne earned victories over Cottage Hill, Elberta, Saraland, Hernando (MS) and Tate (FL).

Back to School Bash in Fairhope

Before Fairhope’s Back to School Bash tournament, Bayside Academy split non-region matches with a win over Gulf Shores and a loss to St. Paul’s Episcopal. In tournament play, the Admirals took down Fairhope, LAMP, St. Michael and Gulfport (MS) in between losses to Madison Central (MS). The Admirals finished with a win over Auburn to close things out.

The host Fairhope Pirates earned a non-region win over Spanish Fort earlier in the week before they emerged victoriously over St. Michael Catholic and St. Luke’s with losses to Bayside Academy and Maison Central (MS) sandwiched in between.

The St. Michael Catholic Cardinals fell in tournament play to Fairhope, Madison Central (MS) and Bayside Academy but finished with a 2-0 win over LAMP. In non-region play before the tournament, St. Michael beat Baldwin County in between losses to MGM and St. Paul’s Episcopal.

Spanish Fort takes on Tournament of Champions

Earlier in the week, the Spanish Fort Toros opened region play with a sweep of Robertsdale to lead them into action at the Tournament of Champions at Guntersville. There, they split their four matches with wins over Plainview and Prattville Christian and losses to Brentwood (TN) and Westminster Christian.
