Baldwin County High School seniors take the pledge for education

Posted

On the morning of April 4, Baldwin County High School hosted a ceremony celebrating the commitment of four seniors embarking on a career path in education during the Future Teachers Signing Day. Among the signees are Molly Caruthers, Jameia Brooks and Derriana Bishop, who will pursue their education at Coastal Alabama Community College, and Whitney Jernigan, who will attend Troy University.

During the ceremony, each student shared their college and career aspirations, along with their motivations for pursuing a career in teaching. Many expressed a desire to positively influence students, inspired by the impact teachers had on their own lives, and a commitment to helping students reach their full potential.
Chantelle McPherson, a teacher at BCHS and advisor for the Future Teachers of Alabama chapter, addressed the signees, emphasizing the significance of their chosen path.

"Your mission is to educate and inspire the next generation. It is an important mission and it can't be taken lightly," McPherson said. "Your mission is more than teaching math, science, reading, English or history. You are teaching life and inspiring your students to fulfill their purpose."

McPherson acknowledged that there would be challenges and victories along their journey but stressed the importance and impact of their work, stating "Teaching reminds us that we're part of something bigger than ourselves. I challenge you today to make your students greater than yourself and you will live forever."

Future Teachers of Alabama operates within the Aspiring Educators/Student Division of the Alabama Education Association (AEA), catering to middle and high school students interested in pursuing a career in education. The Future Teachers' Signing Day aims to generate statewide enthusiasm for addressing the teacher shortage in Alabama and honor seniors ready to tackle the responsibility of educating future generations.

The Future Teachers program was introduced at BCHS in 2021, offering participants opportunities for educator job shadowing and engagement in various service projects throughout the academic year. FTA Advisors at BCHS include Chantelle McPherson, Misty Byrd, Diona Davis and Vickie Locke.
