The Baldwin County Education Coalition has partnered with JLS International to establish the JLS International Vocational Scholarship Endowment Fund, aimed at supporting students pursuing Career and Technical Education (CTE) in the county's public schools.
The official signing of the agreement took place on July 31, marking a significant step toward enhancing opportunities for local students interested in vocational careers. The endowment, launched with a $500,000 commitment from JLS International, is expected to reach $1 million, exclusively benefiting CTE students.
Jeffery L. Smith, owner and president of JLS International, a mechanical contractor with deep roots in Baldwin County, emphasized the importance of vocational and technical training in preparing students for successful careers. Smith has contributed an initial $250,000 with a second donation of the same amount planned for December according to the Baldwin County Education Coalition.
The fund remains open for additional contributions from corporate and individual donors who share a commitment to advancing technical education in the area.
Career and Technical Education equips students with practical skills and hands-on experience directly applicable to the workforce. By addressing skill gaps and meeting employers' needs, CTE plays a crucial role in promoting economic growth. The JLS International Vocational Scholarship Fund aims to remove financial barriers for students pursuing technical careers, ensuring they are job-ready upon graduation.
Administered by a scholarship committee appointed by the Coalition's Board of Directors, the fund will provide annual scholarships valued at $1,000 each. These scholarships, awarded upon graduation, can be used to cover tuition for certifications or to purchase tools and equipment essential for the recipients to begin their careers.
