BAY MINETTE —-Daphne fought off a late BCHS comeback and used a 16-6 run to take a 59-46 victory over the Tigers Tuesday evening in Bay Minette.
Baldwin County used a three pointer by Isiah Dortch to cut Daphne's lead to just 43-40 with 4:45 left in the game Coach Cedric Yelding's crew then went on their 16-6 run to wrap up the big area victory.
Coach Lorenzo Hunter's Baldwin County squad had led comfortably in the first half, taking leads of 9-3, 12-5, 15-6, and 19-8 before the visitors got things rolling. Big three pointers from Montez Brown, Dortch, Khalia Ezell, and Montrey Bishop were key in the Tigers taking the early advantage.
DHS's 9-0 run to close out the first half gave them their first lead, taking a 29-25 halftime advantage into the intermission break. Daphne led 37-31 after three, setting up the final period battle.
The Trojans, now 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the area, were led in scoring by inside players Bradley Nero and Devonte Young. Both had 16 point efforts and both had crucial buckets in the final eight minute quarter. Tevin Rencher added 14 for the visitors with Kareem Brown adding seven. C.J. Yelding had four as did Whelyn Tolbert.
Baldwin County, now 4-4 overall and just behind the Trojans at 2-1 in area action, was led in scoring by Dortch's 14 point effort. Brown added nine for Hunter's team while Ezell netted seven. Jakori Savage scored six with Bishop and JaQuan Finch added five each. Both Savage and Finch, Baldwin County's two big men, fouled out mid-fourth quarter and Nero and Young took advantage inside to put back some easy buckets.
BCHS returns to action Friday, hosting Foley in Bay Minette while tDHS goes to McGill-Toolen Friday.
