You might be one of Lady Gaga’s ‘Little Monsters,’ part of Beyoncé’s BeyHive or one of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sheerios.’
But the next time you attend the Annual National Shrimp Festival, you could have a new name to add to the list.
“We all know that fans of Jimmy Buffett are called ‘Parrotheads.’ Just like fans of Taylor Swift are called ‘Swifties’ and fans of Justin Bieber are ‘Beliebers,’” a release from the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber and National Annual Shrimp Festival committee said. “Now is your chance to coin a name for fans of the Annual National Shrimp Festival.”
Festival organizers have launched a contest inviting fans to come up with a nickname for the people who flock to Gulf Shores for the annual event. The winning entry will earn a swag bag filled with goodies from the Official Annual National Shrimp Festival Merchandise Tent.
“I’ve written press releases for the Shrimp Festival for more than 20 years, and I have always cringed when the people that come down for the festival are referred to as attendees in my releases,” Festival Media Chairman Clayton Wallace said in the release. “At a recent staff meeting we batted around the idea of coming up with a name other than attendees.”
During that meeting, staff members decided to let festival fans take part in the naming process.
“We’ve created an online entry form. We want Festival fans to go and submit their ideas for naming themselves,” Festival Co-Chairman Rob Barnas said. “We’re looking forward to receiving some creative names, but we also want to make sure the submissions are family-friendly since we’re a family-friendly event.”
Fans can submit their ideas at https://tinyurl.com/sfcontest26. The deadline to enter is 10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30.
If multiple people submit the winning name, a random drawing will determine the winner. The winner will be announced during the week of the festival and receive a swag bag of goodies from the Official Annual National Shrimp Festival Merchandise Tent.
“We have the best fans anywhere,” Barnas said. “We want to give them an original nickname they can be proud of. I can’t wait to see the submissions!”
The Annual National Shrimp Festival is set for Oct. 8-11. More information about this year’s activities, vendors and music lineup is available at www.myshrimpfest.com.
So go ahead and put that creativity to work. Every great fan base needs a great name, and maybe the next one starts with you. It could be the idea everyone is talking about at the Annual National Shrimp Festival.
