'Survivor' 50, Ep. 6: Gulf Shores’ Jonathan Young survives a triple tribal episode, picks a side

If you’re pulling for Alabama Gulf Coast native Jonathan Young to make a deep run, and possibly win, CBS’s ‘Survivor’ 50, Wednesday’s sixth episode might give you reason for optimism, but Young’s tribal vote may create future conflict as well.

The episode begins with Young appearing to mend relationships with his Cila tribe, saying he wants to work with Dee and Kamilla moving forward, after being left out of the prior episode’s Charlie vote. Then, the remaining 17 players merge onto one beach, and we see Young playing a prominent role in relationship building with various players.

“A lot of the old schoolers want to work with me, just because of what they saw on season 42. They know that I’m a loyal player,” Young says in a confessional with producers on the episode. “I’m going to be what I was, but I’m not going to stop there. I’m going to make relationships that I wouldn’t have normally made.”

Young continues. “There’s 17 killers, right. You have to be open to 17 different perspectives all of the time. I’m getting ready because I know this next half of the game is going to be so extreme. It’s almost like a rebirth of ‘Survivor,’ this season 50. Because no one knows what to expect. It’s so mysterious.”

Dubbed by host Jeff Propst as a ‘Blood Moon,’ the episode sees two players, Ozzy and Rizo, sent to Exile Island, and then the remaining players randomly split into three tribes of five, with all tribes going to tribal council to vote out a member.

Young’s new tribe includes himself and four women, Chrissy, Stephanie, Kamilla and Tiffany, and although Young’s physical dominance in challenges could make him a threat for elimination, it’s clear on the episode that all of the women want Young to vote with them, and he’s the swing vote.

“It all comes down to Jonathan,” Chrissy says to producers on the episode.

Then, we see Chrissy make her pitch to Young. “Those girls (Kamilla and Tiffany) are totally using you, and you know, that if you’re in the final three, neither one of them is going to give you a million dollars.”

“I know that,” Young responds.

Young ultimately decides to side with Chrissy and Stephanie, the ‘old school’ players from early seasons of ‘Survivor,’ and he votes out Kamilla, who had not told Young about voting out Charlie on the prior episode.

“Drag that man through the mud,” Kamilla says to Tiffany, referring to Young, after being voted out.

Genevieve and Colby are also ultimately voted out on the episode, leaving 14 players left on the historic season. All remaining players will be either finalists or jury members that decide the winner.

The fallout from the Kamilla vote for Young is briefly shown in the preview for the seventh episode, as both Dee and Tiffany appear ready to confront Young about the vote.

‘Survivor’ 50 airs each Wednesday at 7 p.m. on CBS.
