SUMMERDALE — The town of Summerdale is inching closer to once again having its own running water system.

During its regular meeting Monday, the Summerdale Town Council approved geology work on the project to Dan O’Donnell for $22,400, who has been involved with the endeavor since it began.

“Everything he’s done so far has been under budget,” Summerdale Mayor David Wilson said during Monday’s meeting.

As previously reported, the town Public Works Department drilled a well this past spring to test for the possibility of a new water supply. During May’s Council Meeting, Public Works Director John Resmondo reported the successful preliminary testing of the well, which will be located north of its current counterpart on Davis.

The need for a new well came when testing of the original 10-year-old well indicated contaminants in the water supply. As previously reported, the town of Summerdale subsequently shut down the well and began purchasing water from Robertsdale and Riviera Utilities.

With successful testing of the new well, efforts to proceed have been under way. During Monday’s meeting, Resmondo told the Summerdale Town Council that drilling for the well is set to begin next week.

“It should take 60 to 90 days on construction,” he said.

A pre-construction meeting was set to take place Thursday afternoon. However, its results were not available at press time.

Also Monday, the Summerdale Town Council:

Approved a zoning amendment for Vishaway.

Heard a Summerdale Police activity report, which included six felony cases closed in August.

Approved the end of probation for Summerdale Public Library employee Catherine Kennicott, making her permanent part-time staff.

Approved Summerdale Town Clerk Tiffany Lynn to attend training in October.

Heard Wilson suggest that regulations for what can be placed at the town cemetery be established. The council opted to discuss the issue at its next work session.

Set a special meeting for noon Sept. 18 to canvass election results.
