BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A storm system which dumped about 10 inches of rain in Baldwin County forced the closing of six roads on Tuesday, interrupted or terminated public school bus routes and prompted county officials to open an emergency shelter in Bay Minette.

Paula Tillman, Baldwin County public information director, said no one had checked into the shelter as of 8 a.m. Tuesday. She said county residents were expected late Tuesday as inland waterways continue to rise, despite predictions of diminishing rain.

The shelter is at 207 North White Ave. in Bay Minette. For shelter information, call the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency at (251) 972-6807.

“The shelter will be open as long as anyone needs to come,” Tillman said. “We expect people to check in as they assess water damage at their residences.”

Terry Wilhite, director of communications for the Baldwin County School System, said early Tuesday that two full bus routes and a partial bus route that serves Perdido School have been affected.

“Buses will not be able to serve those areas today until road crews can repair damage,” Wilhite said. “Buses are proceeding slowly in other parts of the county and will not cross stranding water in a roadway.”

Tillman said the following roads were closed as of 7:15 a.m. Tuesday:

• County Road 47 at Paul Road.

• County Road 47 from Interstate 65 to U.S. 31.

• Cemetery Road from U.S. 31 to County Road 47.

• Dyas Road from U.S. 31 to the railroad tracks.

• Ben Stewart Road from Rabun Road to County Road 94 (Maytower Road.)

• Splinterhill Road from County Road 47 to Jack Springs Road.
