Snook Family YMCA close to completion in Foley

Reopening date to be announced soon

FOLEY — The reopening date for the Snook Family YMCA is getting closer. Officials with YMCA say that the building is close to completion, and that the date for the reopening will be announced soon.
The building was devastated in 2020 due to Hurricane Sally. The storm tore patches off the roof, allowing water to flood down into nearly every inch of the interior. Following the storm, the interior had to be completely gutted.
Demolition inside the building began in April 2021. The construction phase began shortly after.
YMCA officials and employees hoped to have construction completed within six months and to welcome members back before the year ended. However, it became apparent during construction that would not be the case.
“(There were many) delays in construction due to shipping delays and supplies not being available,” said District Executive Director Kim Hillman. She said COVID-19 also caused multiple delays in construction.
“We are, however, very close to completion. We are working out a few issues with our indoor pool, but the main hurdle that is hindering our actual opening date is our communication systems,” she said.
She said the building is currently awaiting the completion of the communications system in order to begin operations. Construction of the building interior is complete. Once all final issues are resolved Hillman said the reopening date will be decided and announced.
“We are anxious to get our building open and serve our community again,” she said. “This has been a long, frustrating process, but hopefully we are right around the corner!”
The reopening date will be announced on the YMCA website, www.ysal.org, and on the Snook Family YMCA Facebook page, @snookfamilyymca. Anyone with emails in the YMCA system will receive a notification through email.
