Another Bayside Academy Admiral is heading to the Lone Star State after Miles Uter announced his commitment to the Southern Methodist Mustangs on Tuesday, June 25.
Uter’s pledge comes just over a year after his brother Graham’s commitment to SMU entering his senior season. Miles is a 6-foot-5, 225-pound tight end who announced 17 Division I offers, including 10 that arrived this spring starting in May.
The Mustangs kicked off the hot streak with an offer on May 14 which marked Miles’ third from an Atlantic Coast Conference school to join Georgia Tech and Boston College. This season will be SMU’s first in the ACC after 11 seasons in the American Athletic Conference (AAC).
In-state schools including Alabama State, Troy, UAB, Jacksonville State, North Alabama and South Alabama were also among Miles’ suitors. Other announced offers included Georgia Southern, Marshall, Western Kentucky, Arkansas State, UTSA, Incarnate Word, Tulane and Louisiana Tech.
Miles is ranked a three-star recruit by both 247Sports and On3. With a 247Sports Composite prospect score of 0.845, he is the No. 80 tight end recruit in the country and the 46th overall prospect in Alabama. On3 lists a scout grade of 84 with Miles as the nation’s No. 88 tight end and the state’s 45th overall recruit.
With 18 catches for 217 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns over 11 games as a tight end, Miles added 30 total tackles between 13 solos and 16 assists with 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack and 5 quarterback hurries as a defensive end according to MaxPreps stats.
His final high school season is set to take place on the Class 3A stage after Bayside Academy was reclassified during the AHSAA’s biennial process.
The Admirals are entering Year 2 of the Barrett Trotter era and will begin their search for a sixth-straight playoff berth when the regular season kicks off against the St. Michael Cardinals at home on Aug. 23. Play within Region 1 is set to begin on the road against Monroe County on Sept. 13.
The SMU Mustangs are set to open their season on the road against Nevada on Aug. 24 with their first ACC kickoff set for a home game against Florida State on Sept. 28.
In their final year in the AAC, second-year head coach Rhett Lashlee helped lead the Mustangs to an undefeated conference season that ended in an AAC Championship win over Tulane. It marked the school’s first league title since being co-champions of the Southwest Conference in 1984. SMU has qualified for a postseason bowl game the last five consecutive years.
Casey Woods also enters his third season as the Mustangs’ offensive coordinator as well as tight ends coach. He previously coached with Lashlee at Auburn (2009-11, 2013-15) and was also part of UAB’s reestablishment from 2016-19.
Last season, Woods helped SMU register marks that ranked in the program’s top five in six categories (total yards, first downs, points, rushing touchdowns, passing touchdowns and passing yards) and also ranked in the nation’s top 10 in three categories (first down offense, scoring offense, red zone offense). With 55 points or more in four games, Woods and the Mustang offense set a single-season program record.
Bayside Academy fans can hear Trotter and key athletes preview the season at the third-annual Gulf Coast Media Day at the Orange Beach Event Center on July 25.
