Shirley Anne Powell Chapman

Shirley Anne Powell Chapman, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and a resident of Spanish Fort, Alabama, passed away on Mon., Sept. 2, 2024, at the age of 81.

Shirley was a 1960 graduate of West End High School in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, Mississippi in 1964. Shirley began her teaching career in Smith Station, Alabama, in 1964 in Health and Physical Education.  She also taught in Georgia and North Carolina, and continued teaching in Summerville, South Carolina (Dorchester County District 2) from 1976–1993 and in Jacksonville, Florida from 1994–2007.

Shirley is preceded in death by her father, R.C. Powell; her mother, Martha Weir Eitson; brother, Michael Powell; stepfather, Scott Eitson; aunts, Mary Lorene Weir Carpenter, Lucille Weir, Claudia Giddings and Georgia Campbell; and uncles, BC Carpenter, Howard Weir, Ernest Weir, Hoyt Giddings and Robert Campbell.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Wilbur Larry Chapman; her children, Scott (Michele) Chapman of Daphne, Alabama, and Susan (Mark) Gentry of Orlando, Florida; three granddaughters, Riley Nicole Chapman, Kerigan Reece Chapman and Ansley Grace Gentry; and one grandson, Mahlon Thomas Gentry.

A celebration of her life will be held at Westminster Village, 500 Spanish Fort Blvd., in Spanish Fort, Alabama., on Sat., Oct. 12, 2024, at 11 A.M. Arrangements are by Hughes Funeral Home, 26209 Pollard Road, Daphne, Alabama 36526. 251-621-5890. hughesfuneralhome.org.
