I know I’ve been too involved in the college football season and the reason I know is because I’ve forgotten that the end of the world is coming. Since the college season started back in September, all I’ve thought about is the BCS National Championship Game and who might be participating. I’ve let Apocalypse 2012 completely slip my mind. I’ve confessed it many times in this column: I’m a college football addict, so much so that my annual “fix” has made me overlook the fact that the end of the world will take place before the National Championship Game in January 2013.
That said I’m using this space in the short time left to issue a warning … not about the looming Apocalypse. No, it’s a warning to Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel: Run, Johnny, run! Hightail it from the Heisman Trophy as fast as you can!
“Johnny Football” is the latest craze in college football. He’s a freshman phenom and the majority of the football pundits have already handed him the Heisman Trophy as college football’s best player in 2012. Pray that you don’t get it, Johnny! Here’s the reason I say that.
You’re a freshman and no freshman has ever won the Heisman. For your sake I hope it stays that way. If you win the Heisman as a freshman, the very people who vote for you are dooming you at the same time. Just wait until next year when you don’t have as dynamic a year as you did in 2012; when your statistics aren’t up to snuff compared to this year’s. Those same voters will be calling you a disappointment. And what if your junior year doesn’t measure up? And your senior year? The Heisman Trophy is heavy, Johnny, and it’ll weigh you down if you peak as a freshman.
Then, again, the Apocalypse-thing could wipe those concerns out, I guess. Still, my advice would be to run, Johnny, run.
Another football point: Would Bigfoot qualify for an athletic scholarship? The reason I ask is because a Texas company that does DNA diagnostics recently alleged that Bigfoot is a human relative that first appeared about 15,000 years ago. Somehow the company, DNA Diagnostics, has gotten hold of what they say is Bigfoot DNA and have thus concluded that Sasquatch is a human relative.
From what I’ve heard about the size and strength of Bigfoot, he’s got offensive lineman written all over him. Imagine being the first college team to offer Bigfoot an athletic scholarship. He could be a two-sport guy: football and a power forward on the basketball team. Honestly, you have to wonder if Bigfoot was playing if anybody would even know Johnny Manziel’s name. I can see it happening one day – Bigfoot anchoring some university’s offensive line. As a relative of us humans, if indeed he is, grades won’t matter, not if he can pass block. Next stop: Bigfoot in the NFL.
How about this for a fantasy team: Bigfoot snapping the football to Johnny Manziel!
