The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s indoor track state championships got underway Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex with Classes 1A-3A and Class 6A in action. Classes 4A-5A and Class 7A will compete Saturday.

On the 6A girls’ circuit, Ryan McGilvray, Whitney Wells, Rylee Kennedy and Laila Cooper from Robertsdale teamed up to set a school record in the 4x800-meter relay at 11:00.91 which topped the record set last year by nearly five seconds according to athletic.net.

Spanish Fort had a pair of runners earn two school records each where Kate Miller smashed an eight-year-old record in the 800-meter run by over 12 seconds with a time of 2:24.05 as well as broke last year’s 1600-meter record by nearly 30 seconds with a time of 5:19.42.

Similarly, Winston McGhee — recently named an AHSAA cross country All-Star — bested the 800-meter record set last year by nearly eight seconds at 1:58.18 and topped the 3200-meter record also set in 2015 by more than 10 seconds. In the field events, Hunter Hall’s shot put of 43’ 11.25” broke the previous record set last week by over nine feet.

Bayside Academy’s Annie Midyett took down a 2016 school record with a 2:21.14 time in the 800-meter run which improved the mark by nearly three seconds. The girls’ 4x400-meter relay team’s time of 4:28.89 now ranks fourth in Admiral history and Madeline Dudley’s best long jump of 16’ 1.25” ranks third.

Also in the relay events, the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team of John Thomas Neill, Trey McKean, Ashton Rowland and Ty Postle set a Bayside Academy record by just over a second to top the mark set last season.
