SILVERHILL, Ala. — In its first year to participate in the Central Baldwin Relay for Life, the town of Silverhill has set some lofty goals.
The town will participate in Central Baldwin’s Relay for Life event set for Nov. 16 at Robertsdale High School. The town is also planning fundraising efforts of its own with an auction and motorcycle ride, both scheduled for next weekend.
“We decided to combine our fundraising efforts this year,” said Silverhill Police Chief Kim Wasdin, who is heading up the fundraising efforts along with Dalton and Eloise Head, owners of Silverhill Antiques, host of next weekend’s auction. “We have set a goal of $25,000, but we won’t reach that goal unless we can get more items donated.”
The auction, which is set to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at Silverhill Antiques, located on Highway 104 across from Silverhill Town Hall.
Items accepted for donation include antiques, collectibles, furniture, jewelry, artwork, cars and boats.
Anyone wishing to donate items can contact Dalton or Eloise Head at 947-5168 or cell numbers, 228-0861 or 228-0862; or Wasdin at 945-5200.
The benefit Motorcycle Ride is also scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Riders will leave from Oscar Johnson Park in Silverhill at 9 a.m. Instead of the traditional “Poker Run,” Saturday’s event will be a “Raffle Run,” Wasdin said.
The ride will cost $30 for bike, which includes a t-shirt and a ticket, plus $10 for each additional rider. T-shirts will also be available at a cost of $12 each. At each location on the run, riders can pick up tickets for prizes that will be drawn at the end of the day. Each rider, including pilot and passengers, will receive a ticket.
Ticket locations include County Road 64 at Highway 112 in Gateswood; the old K-mart parking lot at the intersection of Highway 59 and 31; the intersection of Highway 59 and 225; and the Spanish Fort Scenic Overlook.
Riders must return to Silverhill Town Hall by noon and the drawing is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Prizes will include a four day, three night cruise to the Bahamas (winners will pay the cost of taxes, which comes to $59 per person), three day, two night stay in New Orleans, a men’s and lady’s pulsar watch; a $25 gift certificate to L.A. BBQ; a family dinner at Danny’s Fried Chicken; a gift certificate to David’s Catfish House, a tour bike motorcycle cover, a set of camping chairs, among other prizes.
For more information about the raffle run, call the police department at 945-5200 or 945-5206.
In addition, Silverhill’s Relay for Life effort will include the purchase of memorial tiki torches. For $25, the name of a cancer victim or survivor can be placed on the torch, which will be lit at a special ceremony Friday, Nov. 9.
The torches will also be placed at the Central Baldwin Relay for Life event set for Friday, Nov. 16 at Robertsdale High School.
Torches can be picked up at Relay for Life or at town hall on Monday, Nov. 19.
Of course, you can also be a part of the team, raise money and walk Friday, Nov. 16 at Robertsdale High School.
