Rec board ready for park

DAPHNE — The Daphne Recreation Board on Wednesday unanimously voted to recommend that the City Council greenlight construction on an entrance and road to a new recreation park.

The board has about $800,000 in designated funds to start construction on the park that will be adjacent to Wal-mart, according to Councilman August Palumbo.

The board will recommend to the council that a portion of these funds be used to start the entrance and road to the park.

The council’s approval to start the entrance and road to the park would show intent to build it, according to city clerk David Cohen. This is important because the city can then apply for grants to help with the park’s construction, Cohen said.

The first grant Cohen will apply for is a $250,000 grant for an Americans with Disabilities Act-approved, boundless playground.

The grant is “straight money,” that is, the city would not have to match funds, he said.

“I’d like to carry the torch on that so kids with disabilities and without disabilities can play together,” Mayor Fred Small said.

The playground would be considered a regional playground for Baldwin County, Cohen said.

The Recreation Board’s map shows that proposed facilities within the park include a skate park, a swimming pool, a bicycle motocross track and about 10 baseball and softball fields and walking trails. The boundless playground would be built close to the entrance, according to the map.

The new park will allow for the consolidation of sports.

All of the baseball fields will be at one park, all the soccer fields at another park, the Al Trione Sports Complex, Recreation Board Chairman Ed Nelson said.
