A public meeting is set to discuss a report on the Clotilda Phase III investigation.

The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will feature the Alabama Historical Commission and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District presenting the findings from this most recent phase of investigating the site of the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to bring captive Africans to the United States.

The discovery of its wreckage at the bottom of the Mobile River, evidence of its illegal journey that brought 110 kidnapped Africans to Alabama in 1860, 52 years after the international slave trade was outlawed, was announced in 2019.

Discussion at the meeting will also go over the preservation plan for the site as well as the steps for the installation of fixed aids to navigation around the sunken wreck.

The meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Robert Hope Community Center, 850 Edwards St., Mobile.
