Pawsome treats

I’m taking a slight turn this week from our normal recipes. I currently share my home with a four-legged friend, and this recipe is for her.

Dogs love peanut butter. Everyone knows it. It’s fun to watch them eat it and they don’t love anything more — it’s a win-win for all of us.

I make these dog biscuits for my pup, Ellie, and my mom’s three dogs, too. They are easy to chew for older dogs whose teeth aren’t what they used to be, can easily be broken into smaller pieces for smaller dogs and actually help my mom’s dog’s stomachs. Most treats make their stomach rumble and gargle … not these treats.

And did I mention how simple they are to make? With a few simple ingredients everyone has on hand, these treats are also wallet friendly.

Doggie treats

2 ½ cups whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 ½ cup peanut butter (or more, you can never have too much of this stuff)

1 cup milk

Heat oven to 375 F. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder; set aside. In a bowl, combine milk and peanut butter (I used a mixer). The more you combine these ingredients, the easier and smoother it will be. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients.

Turn out the dough on to a lightly floured service and knead for about 2 minutes. Roll out to a ¼-inch thickness and cut out shapes. If you don’t have a rolling pin, use a drinking glass or just pat out with your hands. Remember, the dogs don’t care about how it looks, they just want a treat.

Place cut out shapes on a greased baking sheet for 20 minutes. (I used a few different sizes of cookie cutters and a done bone-shaped cutter.) The biscuits will puff slightly. Let cool on a rack and store in an airtight container. I always put my treats in the refrigerator.
