National animal nonprofit to visit Baldwin Humane Society

This week, the Jordan's Way National Tour will visit the Baldwin County Humane Society as part of a national campaign to help shelters raise money.

Jordan's Way is an animal welfare nonprofit. The founder and CEO Kris Rotonda was inspired to change gears from real estate to animal welfare advocacy after adopting Jordan, a Bull Mastiff, German Shepherd and Samoyed mix who had been a shelter dog for three years.

This summer, the Jordan's Way team is on a mission to visit 300 shelters across the United States, and the Baldwin Humane Society was one of the locations selected. The team helps the shelters raise money through Facebook Live feeds where viewers can watch employees and volunteers participate in activities like pie in the face and ice bucket challenges. Donations can be made from the Facebook app or directly to the shelter.

"We are excited about finding new ways to connect with donors. They have really interesting ways of how they reach out to the community. Learning new ways to interact with the community will be good for us," said Abby Pruet, the Baldwin Humane Society's executive director.

A small team of staff and volunteers in Fairhope work each day to care of the unwanted pets of Baldwin County. The Baldwin Humane Society was the first animal welfare agency in 1979 and continues to be the only county-wide nonprofit animal welfare agency with a brick-and-mortar location. Each year they adopt out anywhere from 300 to 400 animals and support many programs through the generosity of the community.

Pruet said she is also excited for the Jordan's Way team to bring attention to the shelter's longest residents.

"We have dogs, Lazlo and Ramona, two of our big ones that are sweet dogs that we have had too long. We are a no kill so they will stay with us forever but that is not fair to them. The dogs want to be adopted. We are excited to have someone come whose goal is to help us highlight them and show people these are good dogs, too; they are just harder to place than the little dogs," Pruet said.

The fundraising goal set is $20,000 but Pruet said they will be happy with any amount of money that they wouldn't have had otherwise. The money would go a long way to helping the facility and supporting it's many programs.

"Adoptions are our priority, but we also transport pets all over the country for adoption. We have a low cost spay and neuter voucher program, a free community trap, neuter and return program for community cats and public medical assistance program. One of our big goals is keeping pets with people," Pruet said.

Volunteers are the backbone of the facility and there is something for everyone who is 16 years or older. There is also a need for male volunteers to help socialize the dogs as most of the staff and volunteers are women.

"Whatever skill set you have we need help with it. From answering phones, entering data, cleaning furniture in the resale shop to helping clean and walking dogs. If you are not physically able you can just sit and help socialize cats and kittens. We need help so whatever you want to do get involved," Pruet said.

The Jordan's Way Tour fundraising live event is scheduled for June 10 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The fundraising page is live on Facebook and can also be accessed by visiting baldwinhumane.org. Donations can be made anytime but make sure to watch the live event.

The Baldwin Humane Society is located at 2288C U.S. Highway 98 in Fairhope.
