BAY MINETTE — A Mobile man died Friday when the small engine plane he was piloting taxied off the end of the airport tarmac early Friday morning March 11 at the Bay Minette Municipal Airport.
According to a release issued by Bay Minette Police Chief Al Tolbert, police and fire officials from Bay Minette responded to the scene after the airplane taxied off the tarmac onto rough terrain and overturned.
According to the release, the pilot, identified Monday, March 14 as Robert Doyle Hickman of Mobile, was pronounced dead at the scene. His dog, who was also on board, was reportedly uninjured in the accident.
A report filed Monday by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the plane as an American AA-1. According to the report, the “aircraft crashed under unknown circumstances at the end of the runway ….” Minor damage was reported to the plan, according to the report.
A cause of death has yet to be determined. Officials with the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash.
