The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in connection with an investigation that started in late April on the Fort Morgan peninsula.

Michael Todd Whittenton, 32, was arrested after leading officers on a high-speed pursuit. After the pursuit, Whittenton was reportedly found to be in possession of numerous firearms that had been taken during car burglaries in the Fort Morgan community early that day. His arrest was the culmination of an extensive and ongoing investigation into a rash of auto burglaries in the Fort Morgan area.

In late April, numerous auto burglaries were committed in the Fort Morgan community of Baldwin County. The suspect targeted both locked and unlocked vehicles, taking items such as purses, cash and handguns. The crimes appeared to center around when vacationers were arriving at their rental condominiums for extended stays.

Whittenton was identified as a suspect during the investigation. He is currently being held in the Baldwin County jail on charges of attempting to elude a police officer, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and possession of a pistol by a violent felon. Whittenton has an extensive arrest record dating back to 2009.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office reminded residents and visitors to remove valuables from their cars, lock their cars, turn on outside lights and lock their homes. Being a responsible gun owner comes with accountability, such as proper use and stowing when not in use.

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said this is an ongoing investigation.
