FOLEY, Ala. — Because of a clock malfunction at Ivan Jones Stadium in Foley, the time showed double zeros all night long Friday night. The Foley Lions defense set out to leave a zero on the visitors' side of the board as they took on the Robertsdale Golden Bears.
And thanks to four early Bear turnovers, they were able to accomplish just that for the first 3 1/2 quarters of the contest. Robertsdale managed to score two late touchdowns as Foley cruised to a 42-14 victory in 6A Region 2 opening action.
Robertsdale ran just nine offensive plays on its first four series of the game, fumbling three times and throwing one interception. Foley turned all four turnovers into points, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter, then adding another early in the second to take a 28-0 halftime lead.
After stopping the Lions on their first offensive series, the Golden Bears took over on their own 9-yard line after Foley punted near midfield.
But RHS would fumble at its own goalline two plays later and Foley picked the ball up in the endzone for the score, adding the extra point to go up 7-0 early in the first period.
Robertsdale took the ball back at its own 20, but two plays later the pigskin landed back in the hands of the Lions as Cedrix Reed picked off a Caleb Sumrall pass and Foley got the ball at the Bear 35.
After a pair of penalties moved the ball back, then forward five yards, runs by Kalif Koen and D'Marsjae Casey gave the Lions a first down at the 15 where Koen punched it in and Marco Fabian made good on his second point-after attempt to give the Lions a 14-0 lead.
The Bears again took over on their own 20 and again turned the ball over as Sumrall was sacked on the first play from scrimmage and coughed up the football amid a sea of Lions, giving Foley the ball at the Golden Bear nine.
Quarterback Darius Powell connected with Seth Tibbs on the next play for the score and this time Jose Zapeda kicked the point after to give Foley a 21-0 lead in the waning moments of the first quarter.
This time the RHS offense stayed on the field for four plays, encroaching into Lion territory at the 36, but Dalton Krass picked up another Bear fumble as Foley got the ball back at the 41-yard line.
From there the Lions mounted a 15-play, 59-yard drive. Koen ran five times for 29 yards and Powell connected on 5 of 5 passes for 54 yards.
The extra yardage came on a Lion penalty that pushed the ball from the Golden Bear seven back to the 23 yard line. The Lions came up short on third-and-goal running from the RHS eight down to the two. But what would have been fourth-and-goal from the two turned into third-and-goal from the 23 after the penalty.
Foley took advantage of the extra down, as Powell hit Bob Pugh in the endzone for the score and Fabian came back on the for the point after to put the Lions up 28-0 in the second quarter.
Both teams mounted drives that came up short, each missing identical 40-yard fieldgoals to end the first half.
Robertsdale recovered an onside kick near midfield and drove all the way down to the Lion 14, but a sack followed by a penalty which left the Bears with a net loss of 11 yards left RHS with third-and-37 from the Lion 41. They were able to get 18 back on an 18-yard Sumrall pass to John Vaughn, setting up a 40-yard try by Colby Norman. But the kick missed wide right, leaving the score at 28-0.
Foley took over on their own 20 and drove all the way to the Robertsdale 12, where the Bear defense stiffened thanks to the play of Cordero Dade, who stuffed a pass play for a five-yard loss, then sacked Powell for another big loss. Anthony Smith Jr. then broke up a pass in the endzone leaving Foley with a 40-yard try of its own. Zepada's attempt sailed wide left, however, leaving the score at 28-0 at the half.
Foley would score twice more in the second half before Robertsdale could get on the board, taking over at the Robertsdale 45 after taking the Bears three-and-out to start the second half.
Koen ran four of Foley's five plays for 25 yards with Casey adding a 20 yard run before Koen punched it in from five yards out.
Foley got the ball back at the Robertsdale 43, thanks to a sack for a 12-yard loss by Dre'Shon McGaster and backup runners Christian Sarver and Joseph Brister ran the ball for the Lions. Powell also connected with Javian Davis for a 14-yard strike with Brister rumbling in from 14 yards out for the score and Zepada kicked the extra point to give the Lions a 42-0 lead.
Robertsdale would get on the board with 6:37 to play in the game mounting an 80-yard, 14 play drive capped by an eight-yard strike from Sumrall to Samuel Tolbert. The point after cut the lead to 42-7.
Robertsdale added one final score with under a minute to play after Dade blocked a punt atttempt giving Robertsdale the ball at the Foley 30. Vaughn then ran it in from 13 yards out for the score and Norman kicked the extra point to make the score 42-14 with 43 seconds remaining.
Foley was able to run out the clock, however, as backup QB Mason Taylor came on to end the contest for the Lions, taking a knee on three straight plays, but the Lions were left with nine seconds left on the clock on fourth down and had to run one final play with Davis managing to stay in bounds on an 18-yard run to end the contest.
Robertsdale ran just 17 total plays in the first half as the Lion defense held them to just 49 yards of total offense. In contrast the Lions ran 33 plays in the first half gaining 218 yards of offense.
