The head football coaching position at Bayside Academy is now vacant after Phil Lazenby stepped down.
The school reportedly asked Lazenby to relieve his post after 16 years as the Admirals’ head coach, and his 23rd year as a head coach overall, and he did so hoping to continue coaching.
Lazenby served as just the second head coach in Bayside Academy football history where he recorded the school’s first winning season and playoff berth in just his second season. The Admirals went on to qualify for 12 more postseasons and earned an overall record of 115-72.
It was the last win of this season that also marked the 200th of Lazenby’s career in 308 games.
Before the season, he wasn’t too certain how the 2022 Admirals would fare since very few of them had varsity experience. He said it wasn’t going to be a matter of if they were good football players, it was going to be when they were going to be great.
Bayside Academy got out of the gates with wins in its first four games before setting a program record for single-game scoring in its 66-48 region win over Escambia County.
However, the win over St. Michael Catholic in the final minute proved to be the largest where it determined a three-way tiebreaker which helped the Admirals qualify for the playoffs instead of the Cardinals.
