GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Daphne Lady Trojans came from behind in the second half to beat host Gulf Shores 45-38 in the girls championship game at the Coca-Cola Christmas Tournament on Wednesday.
The Lady Trojans defeated Williamson in overtime on Tuesday in the first round to reach the finals.
Daphne coach Cedric Yelding said the two tough games would help his team in the long run.
“I think it was very beneficial for us,” Yelding said. “In these holiday tournaments you can get some people in that don’t normally play. You can get them some minutes and try to get them to pull together more as a team. I think we pulled together because we had to come from behind to win both games. Yesterday was a tough game and today Gulf Shores played us really tough.”
The Lady Trojans improved to 6-3 overall and will host Williamson on Jan. 4. Gulf Shores fell to 10-5 and will play in the Cottage Hill tournament this week.
Amber Yelding led Gulf Shores with 18 points and Amanda Patton hit five three-pointers to add 15 points for the Lady Trojans.
Laura Peavy led Gulf Shores with 15 points and Nicole Wallace added 10 in the loss.
“Amanda Patton hadn’t been shooting the ball very well but she stepped up tonight,” Yelding said. “That’s was big for us. We had lost a couple close games where if we had shot the ball well we would have won. She was a bright spot for us today.”
