A Baldwin County community is rallying around a young child facing a rare and painful medical condition, organizing a benefit event to help cover the cost of her ongoing care.
“Hope Blooms for Eleanor” is set for May 3 at Bella Sera Gardens, located at 25049 County Road 49 in Loxley, beginning at 2 p.m. The family-friendly event will raise funds for Eleanor, a toddler living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a genetic disorder that causes extremely fragile bones and frequent fractures.
In recent months, Eleanor’s condition has worsened, with more frequent breaks and increasing pain. Her family is working to secure specialized treatment, including care from out-of-state doctors, as medical needs continue to grow.
Eleanor's mother, Tasha Johnson, said the challenges have intensified as they seek answers and treatment options. Eleanor has endured significant medical setbacks, including a recent rib fracture that occurred while she slept.
“That was the day I woke up and said that I can’t keep fighting and waiting for insurance to cover these out of state visits,” Johnson said. “I was going to fundraise until I couldn’t anymore so I could get my baby to the doctors that she needs to be.”
The benefit event will feature live music, food, a petting zoo, bounce houses and a photo booth, along with a silent auction and raffles supported by local businesses. Raffle items include items such as an Ashley Furniture recliner, tattoo sessions, professional photo sessions, restaurant gift cards, gift baskets and more.
“The goal of the event is to raise funds to help with Eleanor’s medical care, travel to specialized doctors and treatments related to Osteogenesis Imperfecta,” Johnson said.
Organizers say the event is designed to be a welcoming, family-friendly gathering that allows residents to support Eleanor while enjoying a day together.
Johnson also pointed to the strong response from the community in the lead-up to the event.
“What has been incredible is how many people in our community have stepped forward to help, local businesses donating items, musicians offering their time and neighbors rallying around Eleanor,” Johnson said.
Want to help? Local businesses are encouraged to continue contributing through raffle items, gift cards or sponsorships, with organizers emphasizing that community involvement has been key to making the event possible.
