The #BettyWhiteChallenge, meant to encourage fans of the "Golden Girls" star to honor her with animal shelter donations this month, means families in Baldwin County can adopt a new pet for just 99 cents.
Animal advocate and actor Betty White died Dec. 31, 2021, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Since her passing, the viral #BettyWhiteChallenge has inspired fans to donate to animal shelters in her honor on Jan. 17, what would have been her 100th birthday.
The Haven No-Kill Animal Shelter in Fairhope has joined forces with the Baldwin County Animal Shelter and the Fairhope Animal Shelter to offer 99 cent adoptions for all cats and dogs Jan. 17-21. The Haven's normal adoption fee for dogs is $175 and $125 for cats.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to adopt a new family member and recognize the humanitarian work of the late Betty White. She spent her career using her voice and celebrity platform to help homeless, neglected animals have second chances. I believe she would be moved by the unity and animal activism across the country as we all try to continue Betty White's legacy," said Michael Graham, executive director at The Haven.
The Baldwin County Humane Society in Fairhope is asking people to join the #BettyWhiteChallenge and donate money or supplies in her memory.
