Gulf Shores expands golf cart access with Cotton Bay subdivision permits

Posted

GULF SHORES — Another neighborhood is getting golf cart access north of the island.

Gulf Shores City Council unanimously approved during its Jan. 12 regular meeting for permitted golf carts to be driven in the Cotton Bay subdivision on County Road 4, which allows the neighborhood to connect to other golf cart accessible areas.

Golf carts are not permitted on County Road 4, or Cotton Creek Drive, however, golf carts from the Cotton Bay subdivision will be able to cross the road to Royal Glenn Boulevard, which connects to Craft Farms and the Pelican Place shopping center.

There is no designated crosswalk space across this area of County Road 4.

Jenny Wolfschlag, who presented the request at the Jan. 5 council work session, said the homeowners association for Cotton Bay reached out to the city in November to request designation as a golf cart community. According to the letter, attached to the agenda item, the request “aligns with the community’s interests in promoting accessibility, resident convenience and sustainable transportation alternatives within Cotton Bay.”

The agenda item also states there will be no modifications to existing roadways, and signage will be added to the subdivision.

Wolfschlag said at the meeting that all roads in the subdivision will allow golf carts. These roads include Cotton Bay Boulevard, Savannah Lane, Plantation Lane, Cotton Bay Lane, Cotton Bay Drive West, Cotton Bay Drive East and Cotton Bay Court.
