ORNAGE BEACH, Ala. — Orange Beach faired well during Hurricane Gustav, according to City Administrator Ken Grimes.
With little to almost no damage reported, Grimes reported that the city handled preparation well and he commended city personnel for the constant communication that occurred during the storm.
In other Orange Beach council news:
-A lounge retail liquor license was approved for Willie G’s Liquor Spot, 26831 Canal Road Unit 8.
-A resolution was approved in support of an island Christmas parade.
-A public hearing was set to discuss the Southern Light Franchise violation for Sept. 8 at 3:30 p.m. In January 2006, Southern Light’s contractor caused a sewer main brake resulting in $39,290 in repairs the city was forced to fund. The meeting is a result of Southern Light’s failure to reimburse the city.
-The council approved a resolution to support the transfer to the state the Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation and Protection Program grant.
-A resolution was passed approving to incorporate a public corporation as an improvement district. The council then approved a resolution to appoint directors to the board of directors of Bama Bayou improvement district. Those directors are planning commission chairman Al Bradley, council member Jeff Silvers and Robert Stuart of the planning commission.
-The council authorized the mayor to execute a performance contract with Alabama PALS for Coastal Cleanup 2008.
-Authorization also occurred for professional service contracts with Endangered Species Act Consulting Services, LLC and Pan-American Consultants. The mayor explained that these services are on a as needed basis and are no cost to the city unless used.
-A first reading of a special events license amendment to the Code of Ordinances did not pass and will be discussed at the next meeting.
-A first reading of a repeal of the Reynolds site PUD rezoning and preliminary master plan approval passed with unanimous consent. City clerk Cathy Constantino said that because no work was done within one year of the approval the zoning status reverts back to the original zone.
-A second reading for an amendment to prohibit the feeding and harassment of wild animals led the council table the issue.
-A second reading for an ordinance to provide issuance of a $4,750,000 general obligation warrant failed to pass.
