GlenLakes Golf Club in Foley announces scholarship program for junior golfers

Scholarship applications open in January for local participants of GlenLakes’ Junior Golf Program

Posted

As GlenLakes Golf Club owners enter their 10th year of business, they have decided to give back to their community by planning their first-ever scholarship program for junior golfers.

Scholarships will be offered in May 2023 to graduating high school students who have participated in GlenLakes’ youth golf program. Scholarships are offered by golf organizations but very few directly from a golf course and GlenLakes is proud to be one of those few.

Scholarship applications are set to open Jan. 1, 2023, and close Feb. 28, 2023. Interested graduating seniors in May 2023, who have participated in the GlenLakes Junior Golf Program, should contact David Musial for more information at 251-955-1220.

“We have analyzed our young golfers and know we have at least 15 qualifying seniors that could apply this year,” said Linda Spangrud, one of the owners and a member of the board of directors. “We know this will be up to 40 in the next year or so. We plan to keep increasing our fundraising so we can support more students as our numbers grow.”

Spangrud said the plans are to hopefully award two $2,000 scholarships this year and then grow as more students qualify for the application process.

To help fund the scholarships, GlenLakes will be hosting their first-ever Scholarship Golf Tournament April 14, 2023, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start where lunch and awards will follow play.

Spangrud said she felt inspired to create the scholarship program by her teaching background and wanted to celebrate GlenLakes’ tin anniversary of operation.

“I have been a member of different organizations in Alabama and the U.S. and have done work with the USGA. I am a past educator and truly believe in education and that all students should have a chance to go to college,” Spangrud said. “I know different groups in the area give out athletic scholarships so I started thinking, ‘Why don’t we?’ What a better way to celebrate our tenth year in business?”

The club will be looking for sponsors and players for the scholarship tournament and those interested in supporting the scholarship program with time or money can contact Spangrud at 815-978-5976. As golf tournament ideas are being fleshed out, announcements will be made on how to sign up to play and or sponsor these efforts.

Junior Golf Clinics, Junior Golf League, Adult Lessons and Clinics, birthday party packages, corporate team building packages, and FootGolf are only a few of the many things going on at GlenLakes. It’s a great way to introduce youth – and others – to the beauty of a golf course and a better understanding of the traditional game of golf.

If you are interested in joining GlenLakes Golf Club, contact David Musial, General Manager and PGA Pro, 251-955-1220.
