The Alabama record holder for most sacks in a single game, Spanish Fort’s Cole McConathy, is heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Louisville Cardinals after he announced his commitment on his birthday, Thursday, July 6.
No. 6 for the Toros, listed at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, was offered by Louisville on his first official visit to campus Jan. 15. McConathy’s offer from the Cardinals was his seventh overall where he announced 25 total offers to Division I programs.
247Sports ranked McConathy a three-star recruit with a composite prospect score of 8.65. In the composite rankings, he checked in as the 66th edge rusher in the nation and the 38th overall prospect in Alabama.
Louisville finished 7-5 overall last season, including a 4-4 mark in ACC play, to earn a trip to the Fenway Bowl where the Cardinals beat Cincinnati 24-7 which recorded a third straight victory in the Keg of Nails rivalry. A dozen Louisville players were recognized with All-ACC honors following the regular season.
As a junior, McConathy was named an all-state honorable mention by the Alabama Sports Writers Association after he set a state record with 7 sacks in Spanish Fort’s 33-24 win over McGill-Toolen on Oct. 7. As a second-team all-county representative, he was one of 12 Toros honored by Baldwin County Public Schools.
Before he closed his recruitment, McConathy also fielded offers from Colorado, UAB, LIU, Austin Peay, Tulane, South Alabama, Missouri, Georgia State, Troy, Pitt, Wake Forest, Kansas State, Southern Miss, Jacksonville State, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Duke, Kansas, South Florida, Cincinnati, Virginia, Indiana, Louisiana, Western Kentucky and Memphis.
