As the dust settled on Week 8 of the high school football season, half of Baldwin County’s teams found themselves in the win column with the regular season winding down.
Some teams grabbed the wins they needed to remain in the playoff hunt while others’ postseason dreams may have taken a hit with a setback.
Foley 55, Alma-Bryant 32
The Hurricanes took a 26-19 lead on their first possession of the third quarter but a Reece Tynes keeper and the first of three second-half touchdowns from Kolten Nero’s four-touchdown night gave the Lions a lead.
Foley also got touchdowns from Perry Thompson (43-yard reception) and AJ Prim (29-yard fumble return) but Kenneth Franklin put the icing on the cake with a 29-yard pick-six to lift the Lions to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in Class 7A Region 1. The win also marked Foley’s 15th win over Alma-Bryant in as many meetings.
Up next: The Lions host Davidson (2-5, 0-4) in the first of three home games to end the regular season.
Orange Beach 35, Bayside Academy 29
The Admirals led for about 20 seconds of game time where they kicked off after taking a 29-28 lead and Mako senior and UAB commit Chris Pearson returned it for a touchdown to lift Orange Beach on the road.
Bayside Academy recovered an onside kick and Tait Moore connected with Miles Uter after Damien Tate and Brennen Yamane (twice) ran for touchdowns. But Cash Turner threw one touchdown to Will Reddell and ran another in before Pearson added a rushing touchdown to help the Makos outlast the Admirals.
Orange Beach now sits in a tie with Jackson for third place with identical 3-2 region records behind St. Michael who staked claim to second place with a 4-1 record. Bayside Academy now falls a game behind the Makos for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Up next: Orange Beach hosts Wilcox Central (0-6, 0-5) as one of three home games to finish the regular season. The Admirals travel to Escambia County (4-3, 2-3) Friday.
Spanish Fort 33, McGill-Toolen 24
The Toros picked up their third straight win to take over third place in Class 6A Region 1 with a 4-2 mark in the group. But last Friday’s win suddenly became clouded with doubt.
Spanish Fort built to a 30-10 lead in the fourth quarter behind two touchdowns from Sawyer Wilson, a Jacob Godfrey pass to Anthony Passarelli, a 17-yard score from Khamron Jackson and a 37-yard field goal from Lucas Breaux before the Yellow Jackets grabbed 14 unanswered points.
Cole McConathy’s seven sacks helped lead the Toro defense that came up with the stop they needed which led to Breaux’s 35-yard field goal with only 1:39 left in regulation that finally sealed the deal for Spanish Fort in yet another game that came down to the wire.
Up next: The Toros travel to face Robertsdale (0-7, 0-6) Friday.
No. 6 Gulf Shores 49, Elberta 3
With a fourth straight game scoring more than 30 points, the Dolphins have eclipsed 300 points on the 2022 season already with 309 compared to 141 points allowed to opponents.
It’s only the third time Gulf Shores has scored at least 300 points in a season and the first time since the 2013 season under Ben Blackmon where they only lost to eventual state champion Spanish Fort and St. Paul’s in the regular season.
The next last time was the 2009 season under Mark Freeman when the Dolphins set the program record for most points in a season at 381 and ended the regular season on a six-game win streak where the only game they didn’t score at least 30 points was the final game against Bayside Academy (17-0).
Correction: It was included in Thursday’s game story that Gulf Shores won all of its home games for the first time in program history this season, but it was the 2009 team that first won all of its home games: over LeFlore, Wilcox Central, Citronelle, Escambia County and Faith Academy.
Other Baldwin County final scores
Up next: The Pirates (6-1, 3-1) host Alma-Bryant (3-4, 0-4) and the Trojans (3-4, 3-1) travel to face MGM (4-4, 3-2), both on Friday.
St. Michael 49, Wilcox Central 6
Up next: The Cardinals (5-3, 4-1) host Jackson (5-2, 3-2) Thursday.
Jackson Academy 58, Snook Christian 7
Up next: The Eagles (0-7, 0-2) travel to face Jackson Academy (8-0, 3-0) Friday.
No. 1 Saraland 48, Baldwin County 7
Up next: The Tigers (0-7, 0-5) travel to face Murphy (1-5, 1-4) Friday.
St. Paul’s 39, Robertsdale 14
Up next: The Golden Bears (0-8, 0-5) host Spanish Fort Friday.
