For many, Nov. 18, 2011, is just another date.
But for millions around the world, it marks the official release of a game that would change their lives forever: Minecraft.
Developed by Mojang Studios, this game has captivated children, teens and adults alike for years. What may seem like a simple computer game has become a phenomenon due to its sandbox nature — essentially, if you can imagine something, you can build it with blocks reminiscent of Legos.
Fast forward to today, and Minecraft is more than just a game. Last year, Mojang Studios announced it had sold over 300 million copies worldwide, a feat for a single game not in a series. Popular YouTubers like Markiplier, PewDiePie and MrBeast have contributed to its widespread appeal by featuring the game in their videos.
But why are we talking about a computer game? Because of a certain quest.
A few years ago, a YouTube video created by PippenFTS sparked an ambitious idea: "Would it be possible, one day, to create the entire Earth in Minecraft?" he asked.
This question led to the inception of the Build The Earth project, where builders from around the world recreate real places in Minecraft.
Recently, the Build The Earth USA team announced their latest achievement: recreating the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.
"For those who are fans of Minecraft, take a look at the talent of the Build The Earth USA team. This group works to represent a majority of the United States as part of the Build The Earth project, which seeks to recreate the entire planet on a 1:1 scale in the game Minecraft," the park said in a Facebook post on Tuesday, July 23. "Thank you, BTE Team, for including USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in your project!"
The Build The Earth project has many builders and builder groups all over the world. Build The Earth USA is responsible for recreating the United States (excluding the Northeast) in Minecraft, and the group is always looking for new builders.
