BAY MINETTE, Alabama — Author and theologian Howard Thurman once wrote, “Community cannot for long feed on itself; it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond, their unknown and undiscovered brothers.”
And that’s where you come in, the “unknown and undiscovered brothers.” Your input is needed to help grow two pages of interest on Facebook, which has become, as one of my friends puts it, our new “front porch,” a place where people can congregate and share happenings great and small.
The first page I’d like for you to consider is the Bay Minette Community Calendar page. It is available for everyone in the area to post upcoming events, to help garner support, attendance and feedback. It is a central location to post community, business and civic related happenings, ideas and pictures.
The page, which is still in its infancy, is the brainchild of the Old Town Bay Minette Arts Council. It was created to give one place for all of the community events to be listed after arts council members grew tired of hearing “Well, I didn’t know anything about it,” or “If I had known about it, I would have attended.”
With your help these will be phrases of the past! Mark your calendars! Currently on the calendar page is the upcoming Market Days sponsored by the Old Town Bay Minette Arts Council to be held at Blackburn Park on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There event will feature fresh vegetables, homemade jams, jewelry, artwork and more. There will be something to interest everyone.
On Thursday, Oct. 4, the annual Friends of the Bay Minette Public Library Wine and Cheese Social will be at the home of Sonny and Kathy Dobbins at 501 McMillan Ave. from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 each, and proceeds benefit the library. Next up is the North Baldwin Community Concerts Entertainment Revue on Thursday, Oct.11.
The event begins at 7 p.m. at the L.D. Owen Performing Arts Center on the campus of Faulkner State Community College. The revue will feature 10 local acts performing two numbers each. Tickets for the event are $10 each. Lastly, Halloween Downtown will be Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the John F. Rhodes Civic Center.
There will be a variety of games, a cake walk and a costume contest. The event, which is presented by the Bay Minette Civic Club, is currently recruiting sponsors.
For more information, check out the club’s Facebook page or call 251-463-1909. The second page of interest and worth a long look is the Bay Minette Browsers’ Facebook page. The page is not limited to book club members. It is open to everyone who loves books. It is designed for anyone to share what they are currently reading, favorite authors and to make book suggestions.
Share your book reviews. Let your friends and others know what’s on your reading list. If there is a book that you loved and want others to read, then this is the place to share it. This page is for anyone who has ever asked, “Have you read any good books lately?” If the answer is “Yes,” please let us know!
From community events to what’s on your bookshelf, with just a little effort we can all find ourselves and our interests, you guessed it, on the same page.
