MOBILE – Jamal Woodyard scored four touchdowns as the Fairhope Pirates defeated the St. Paul’s Saints 34-21 on Friday night.
St. Paul’s scored first on a 12-yard run by Jordan Huff. Fairhope answered with a 30-yard field goal by Ian Dingwall followed by a Woodyard touchdown to close out the first quarter.
Woodyard scored on a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter, and D.J. Johnson had a six yard touchdown run for St. Paul’s.
The Pirates led 16-14 at the half.
Woodyard added touchdown runs of 34 and six yards in the third quarter, and Bobby Douglass caught a pass from quarterback Daryl Norris that completed a two-point conversion.
Dingwall concluded Fairhope’s scoring with a 24-yard field goal with 1:35 to play in the fourth quarter.
The win was the first for new Fairhope coach David Faulkner, who came to the school from Foley after the 2008 season. He said the St. Paul’s Wing-T offense gave his defense trouble during the game.
“The Wing-T is something you don’t see every day, and it is very hard to prepare for,” Faulkner said. “(St. Paul’s coach) Jimmy Perry is quite the master at executing it.”
Faulkner said that turnovers hurt his offense.
“We were our own worst enemy on offense tonight,” he said. “Not to take anything away from St. Paul’s, but we had a hard time putting plays together tonight. We have to be more consistent.”
The Pirates (1-0) host Class 6A, Region 2 opponent McGill-Toolen next Friday.
