ELBERTA, Ala. — The town of Elberta could soon have a policy in place to provide for indigent burials.
During Tuesday’s regular workshop, Councilwoman Betty Wood approached the Council with the proposal. Mayor Marvin Williams explained to the audience that the idea stems from a recent incident in which a child had died and the parents could not afford the burial. He explained that Bay Minette Cemetery provided the vault at no charge and Wolfe-Bay Funeral Home took care of the digging.
Upon further discussion of the issue, the council developed the idea of possibly designating a section of the town cemetery for indigent burial.
“It’s just something I want us to think about,” Wood said.
“I think most municipalities have some fund set up for indigent burials,” Councilman Don Koontz said.
The discussion concluded with the town agreeing to consult with the city of Foley on its own indigent-burial policy.
