DAPHNE—The interdivisional aqua bowl between the Gulf Shores Dolphins at the Bayside Admirals finished the regular season Friday night with the 5A GSHS 'Phins out splashing the 3A Sailors 17-0.
Both teams are playoff bound with GSHS traveling to Tallassee and Bayside at Daleville for round one.
"I'm proud of the effort the kids and our coaches put into getting ready," said Bayside coach Phil Lazenby. "Gulf Shores is a very powerful football team and I think they have what it takes to go pretty deep in the 5A playoffs. But our guys didn't back down. we played pretty well defensively, but got ourselves in a hole offensively, especially in the second half."
GSHS, now 8-2, didn't play senior quarterback Logan Paul due to sore ribs said Dolphins coach Mark Freeman whose team set a school record for regular season wins. "He wasn't going to play no matter who we played tonight," he said. "He needs to rest up and get ready for next week. We have a tough week ahead of us. I knew it would be tough coming in here. Coach Lazenby has done a great job and we knew he would have them motivated and they played us tough all night. We knew they were going to be fired up and want to beat us. But our defense played well. We just want to rest some kids and get ready for a tough one against Tallassee."
The Admirals held the Dolphins to one touchdown in the first half. The only score came at 7:08 in the first quarter when GSHS tail back James Burton burst through a seam off tackle and sprinted 65 yards for the touchdown.
Bayside nearly got on the board with a field goal by Garrett Hilton but the 37-yard attempt sailed just wide into a cross wind. The Admirals threatened again in the second period driving to to the GSHS 30, but Camp Campbell's pass intended for Daniel Beebe was deflected and intercepted by Bryan Beviacqua.
Gulf Shores scored on their first series of the third quarter when Silvers hit Brandon Gottfried on a 15 -yard TD strike over the middle on a third and nine play to cap a 67-yard drive. Beviacqua hit both extra points and later added a 24-yard field goal to make it 17 -0 with 7:05 left in the game.
Burton carried 15 times for 123 yards and the score. Silvers connected with Jonathan Adams eight times for 101 yards and with Gottfried six times for 51 yards and the TD. Bayside’s Ryan Owens carried seven times for 58 yards in the first half but set out the rest of the game with a sore ankle. Thomas Buchanan tallied 70 yards on 11 carries for the Admirals.
