DAPHNE – The Daphne Trojans clinched the 6A Area 4 baseball title Saturday. Baldwin County took the runner-up spot later in the day after McGill-Toolen Catholic swept its area doubleheader over Satsuma.

Daphne's Jacob Maske (3-2) got the 10-0 shutout over the BCHS Tigers in game three of the three-game series.

The two teams split Friday with DHS taking game one 7-0 then dropping the nightcap 2-1.

"Jacob did a great job for us today," Daphne coach Joe Hutchins said. "His off-speed stuff was really working well. He threw four pitches for strikes. He was on."

Maske got support at the plate early and often, but only needed one run tossing a two-hit, six strikeout, no walk shutout. But it wasn't all bat, as three costly Tiger errors accounted for part of the DHS score.

"He did an outstanding job of keeping us off balance," said BCHS coach Peter Bezeredi. "We had a chance to get a run with runners in scoring position and couldn't do it. Errors hurt us, too."

Bezeredi said pitcher Daniel Robinson did a great job Friday night of holding the Trojans' run production to one on three hits in game two. "Daniel pitched an outstanding game for us."

Hutchins expected his veteran pitching staff to pull out some key wins, but he was concerned about the consistency of his young hitters.

"Even good pitchers need more than one run sometimes," he said of game-two starter Conner Reese's 1-2 loss to Robinson. "Conner pitched a great game but we couldn't get anybody in.

"Consistency at the plate has not been as good as it could be. But, I'm absolutely proud of these kids. I'm as proud of them as any team I've coached."

Game one starter Mason Hutchins threw a one hitter and drove in three runs on three hits including a homer in his first at bat.

Reese and Tyler Powell also had RBIs for DHS. In game two, Brett Langham drove in the winning run for BCHS after Demetrius Coley's triple tied the score at 1-1 by scoring Jansen Boeschen. DHS got on the board first with a Russ Mosley solo shot that Hutchins said must have gone 800 feet.

On Saturday, DHS hammered out nine hits in five innings, scoring four in the first and one in the second, before going without a run in the third. Then scored five in the fourth before holding the Tigers and taking the 10-0 win.

Eric Britain drove in two runs in the first with a single and later added an infield hit in the fourth to follow Reese's lead-off single. Powell walked, Peterson scored Reese on a sac fly, Jordan Thornhill then double in Cameron Peterson, Powell and Mosley.

Jordan Blanchette then doubled in Thornhill for the game-shortening 10th.

Trace Zarr singled and Boeschen doubled for the Tigers.
