Daphne museum is sweating artifacts after broken air conditioner

DAPHNE, Ala. — Summer tourists have one less attraction to see when they visit Baldwin County.

The Old Methodist Church Museum of Daphne on Dryer Avenue has been closed since June because of malfunctioning air conditioning — and though steps to fix it have begun, one volunteer is concerned about the time involved.

“Needless to say, not only have we lost what little revenue we might have received while the museum has been closed, but the city and the museum are losing credibility with the public,” museum volunteer Mickey Boykin said during public participation at Monday night’s city council meeting. The museum’s only two revenue sources are through public donations and “Daphne” book sales; each copy costs $25.

Boykin, president of the Daphne Museum Committee, said she first reported maintenance problems back in March; the museum closed in June because of high, uncomfortable temperatures.
