A Gulf Shores church will host a couple dozen cyclists this weekend as they stop overnight in Baldwin County on a quest to raise money and awareness for the fight against poverty housing.
Fuller Center Bicycle Adventure cyclists will ride 658 miles over two weeks from Pensacola to Galveston, Texas, with a stop in Gulf Shores on Saturday, Feb. 25. They will be hosted overnight by Lagoon Baptist Church before setting out Sunday morning on a 25-mile ride to Dauphin Island.
The cyclists hail from across the country and share a common goal: to raise money for The Fuller Center for Housing as they pedal along the coast through March 11. They will average about 60 miles per day and will hop off their bikes for two build days as they practice what they preach — once in Hammond, Louisiana, and again in Sulfur, Louisiana.
More than 1,600 riders have pedaled a cumulative 1.5 million-plus miles since 2008 and raised more than $4 million to help families have simple, decent places to live in more than 90 cities across the U.S. and 20 countries around the world.
More than 97% of funds raised by riders go directly to work in the field.
The riders also raise awareness about the nonprofit’s work through speaking engagements, media coverage and simply by talking with people they meet along the way.
