Crowd braves rain for library’s anniversary

MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, Ala. — Through both rain and shine, Magnolia Springs Library celebrated its second anniversary this past Saturday.

The celebration that doubled as a fundraiser was held both outdoors and inside the library during lunch time. Festivities included live musical entertainment provided by Laura Hardy of Huntsville, an inflatable, a book sale and barbecue dished out by volunteers of all ages and members of the Magnolia Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Also on hand were representatives of the Magnolia Springs Garden Club. In addition, Mayor Ken Underwood cut the library’s birthday cake, which was baked and decorated by Donna Skellett.

Librarian Alida Given estimated that quite a number of people braved the midday rain to attend the event.

“It was a successful day,” she said. “To think that people turned out in pouring rain to celebrate our secondnd anniversary certainly demonstrates a true sense of community. We sold 172 rather damp tickets.”

Attendees also came to take a chance on items at the silent auction, which ranged from Chinese bookends, glass art, pottery and paintings to tools, oil changes, movie tickets, inflatable boats and children’s books.

The librarian expressed amazement at the turnout.

“Especially with the rain,” Given said. “People are so good to us.”
