DAPHNE – The Cottage Hill Warriors (2-5) beat the Bayside Admirals (4-3) 30-29 Friday at Freedom Field after Bayside failed to convert on a last-minute scoring drive.
The Warriors took an early lead with a 24-yard field-goal with 1:35 left in the first quarter.
A holding penalty brought a 45-yard TD run by Bayside sophomore Scooter Blake back to the 50-yard line at the 11:35 mark in the second.
After a turnover on downs, the Warriors connected on a 54-yard TD pass to put Cottage Hill ahead 9-0; the PAT was unsuccessful.
Cottage Hill intercepted a pass by Bayside junior quarterback Camp Campbell at its own 15 with 4:22 left in the half.
Two plays later, Bayside returned the favor, intercepting a Cottage Hill pass and taking over at the Warriors’ 35-yard line.
After a successful fourth and six, Campbell scored on an eight-yard run to cut the Warrior lead to 9-8 after a successful two-point conversion.
Bayside’s line shifted left, opening up a wide hole in the Warriors’ goal-line defense, allowing senior running back Chris Ives to bust through on a hitch.
On the opening play of the second half, Blake scored his second TD on a 72-yard sprint to give the Admirals a 14-9 lead.
Cottage Hill scored on a one-yard TD run at 4:39 in the third to go up 15-14 after an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt.
Bayside answered back with 34 seconds left in the quarter with a six-yard TD run by junior running back Thomas Buchanon to put the Admirals ahead 22-15 after another successful two-point conversion.
The Warriors tied the game at 22 with 10:34 left on a five-yard TD run.
At the 5:39 mark and with rain slowly beginning to fall, Buchanon scored his second TD after diving across the goal line, putting Bayside up 29-22.
With the gentle shower turning into a downpour, Cottage Hill connected on a 10-yard pass with 55 seconds left.
The Warriors took the lead for good 30-29 after a successful two-point conversion.
Bayside plays at Luverne on Friday.
