ORANGE, Calif. — “Here I was, a city boy with an air-conditioned office, suddenly thrown into a jungle for 29 days. It was a humbling realization that I was not in control, but God was faithful,” recalls Wycliffe Bible Translators computer programming manager Andy Peck.

Peck was part of a small team that had set out to contact a remote people group in Peru in hopes of translating the Bible into their mother tongue.

“I was selected to help the team make the journey from our main camp, on a tributary of the Amazon River, to a remote camp that had been established near the village,” said Peck said.

Along the way, the team encountered many challenges, including a giant log, which fell across the river, completely blocking their path.

“I spent three days chopping away at the log, trying to clear the way. We had no choice but to camp out on the water’s edge in old thatch huts until I finally chopped through the log,” he said.

Peck knew that God was looking out for him during this exhilarating yet challenging trip. Six months after the trip, he learned that this village was blending with another village and working with the translators to translate the Bible into their heart language.

This was just one of many adventures in Peck’s almost 20-plus years with Wycliffe Bible Translators. Over the years, he has trained countless Bible translators around the world in various software programs to further their work.

Computer technology is playing an increasingly vital role in the powerful ministry of Bible translation, and Peck is thrilled to be able to use his love for computers to help get the Gospel into the hands of people of all languages.

Everyone is invited to join Peck at a Wycliffe Associates Nov. 1 banquet at the Ashbury Hotel in Mobile as he shares about his unique experiences in a world where computers and Bible translation collide. The hotel is located at 600 W. Interstate 65 Service road South. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7.
