"font-size: small;">BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A pet daycare center could be part of the Bay Minette landscape in the near future.
"font-size: small;">During last week’s regular meeting of the Bay Minette City Planning Commission, Rodney and Jessica Kirchar requested that the commission re-zone the property located on 16 Hand Ave., so the married couple could open Just Like Home Pet Day Care. The property I currently zoned as B-2.
"font-size: small;">According to Rodney Kirchar, the couple has plans to grow the business. But upon opening, it would have a single focus.
"font-size: small;">“It’s a pet daycare where you can bring animals in during the day, where they can get some play time,” he told the commission.
"font-size: small;">Bay Minette Planning and Zoning Administrator GeeGee Watts pointed out that an exception would have to be implemented to allow for the business, because none exists in the city’s ordinance.
"font-size: small;">“The closest thing we have is an animal clinic and boarding facility,” she said during the meeting.
"font-size: small;">“Do we have a site plan?” Commission President Karmen Still asked.
"font-size: small;">“I have a hand-sketched site-plan,” Kirchar said.
"font-family: Calibri;">He explained that the facility would contain several small movable fences inside the building that would be re-positioned as needed.
"font-family: Calibri;">“It will be an entirely open area for pets to play in,” Kirchar said. “They will not be kenneled unless the owner requests it.”
"font-family: Calibri;">In addition, pets would go outside periodically throughout the day.
"font-family: Calibri;">“In the back is a 20-foot-by-40-foot fenced-off outside area,” Kirchar said.
"font-family: Calibri;">He added that the couple is leasing the property from Harry Wilson and the rental agreement addresses noise caused by the animals.
"font-family: Calibri;">“We have agreed to sound-proof the building,” Kirchar said.
"font-family: Calibri;">He added that, upon request, the facility would board pets overnight.
"font-family: Calibri;">Following a discussion addressing concerns about sights, sound and smells from animals, the commission asked Watts to look into the process involved in allowing for the venture.
