Robertsdale celebrates end of Centennial year with music written for the town

Trains. An ode to a native-born son. A classic hymn.
On Sunday the Baldwin Pops will unveil the final piece of the city of Robertsdale's year-long Centennial celebration.
The 80-member symphony will perform the world premiere of the "Hub City March," a concert march written and composed by Ryan J. Williams in honor of the town's anniversary.
"The orchestra's willingness and open-mindedness to jump on a project like this has been great," Williams said. "It has been a pleasure to write."
Williams said the piece includes three sounds that musically set the stage to carry the listener to Robertsdale.

First, the percussion section will emulate the sound of a train chugging along the track. Williams said this is an "underlying simple groove that sits underneath everything else in the music."
Those who listen closely will also hear an homage to native-born son Tim Cook of Apple. The Marimba ringtone, recognizable as the very first iPhone ringtone, is nestled into the score under the melody.
Finally, Williams has subtly incorporated the Old Hundred, a hymn also known as "All people that on Earth do dwell."
Williams said the three sounds allow him to play homage to the town while bringing together a melting pot of experiences, lives and history that continues to hum in the city. Though he has been working through the ideas since last year, Williams put the notes to paper this spring.
"Once you begin writing you can hear where the music is pointing next, you let the music guide you," he said.
Williams began composing on the side while teaching music at a high school years ago. Eventually the demand for his compositions became so fevered that he took on the role of composer full time.
As he writes, he listens to two voices in his head, he said. The first, is his mother, a non-musician who just wants to hear a great song. The second is one of his former college professors who prefers that song be technically perfect and something previously unheard.
"I try to find a balance between something that's going to be unusual and interesting but that you don't need to be an experienced musician to appreciate," Williams said. "Really for an artist of any genre we hope the audience will leave the concert and say, 'Hey, that was fun. I enjoyed that'."
