GULF SHORES, Ala. — The March Boating Safety Course will be offered by the Perdido Bay Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, on March 28 at the Magnolia Springs Fire Department.

The course will begin at 8 a.m. and run until 4 p.m.

Pre-registration and materials for the course may be purchased at the Coleman Outlet or Blue Water Ship’s Stores located in Foley.

Class will be limited to 20 students. The instruction for the course is provided free by the members of the Perdido Bay Power Squadron and meets all current Alabama boating license requirements.

Alabama law mandates that every operator of a motorized vessel, sailboat or personal watercraft must be licensed.

Operating a boat without a valid license can result in a citation. It is unlawful for persons under 12 years of age to operate a motorized boat, sailboat or personal watercraft in Alabama waters.

A cost of $50 covers class materials, including a text book, an instructional video on chart navigation and lunch for one person.

If multiple family members are attending only one book is necessary and a small fee will be charged for additional lunches. The next course will be held on April 18.

Materials include information on getting started, what is needed, Rules to Live by and Chart Navigation Training CD.

This course is designed to provide considerably more information than legal minimums and is intended for those who want to significantly enhance their safety and enjoyment of recreational boating.
