Blakeley State Park to offer Teacher Workshop June 13

Annual workshop will focus on using deliberation in the classroom

Historic Blakeley State Park is set to offer its annual Teacher Workshop Tuesday, June 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored in part by the David Mathews Center and the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities at Auburn University. Participating teachers will receive professional development credit through the University of South Alabama’s Research and Inservice Center.

This year’s workshop focuses on using deliberation in the classroom. Deliberation is an exciting, hands-on, interactive professional development experience that equips teachers with skills and tools to increase active civic learning in the classroom and beyond.

By learning how to facilitate having students talk through rather than just read about the choices confronting the participants in historical events, teachers will become equipped to help students take ownership of a variety of problems, better understand choices and consequences and identify areas of common ground for taking action.

Blakeley invites area teachers to join in on the learning of how to integrate this technique for understanding important moments in America’s past by exploring the story of Alabama’s Creek Civil War. As one of the key turning points in state history, this war hinged on difficult decisions made by the Creek people over the future of their culture and traditions.

Participation is free. Teachers will be given an opportunity to take a free excursion into the Mobile-Tensaw Delta on the park’s cruise boat during the workshop, and complimentary lunches will be provided.
