Boston’s Reggie Lewis Center is hosting the New Balance Nationals Indoor this weekend where some of the country’s top track and field talent will compete. Seventh grader Avery Therrell from Bayside Academy was featured in two long-distance races at the middle school level.
Thursday night Therrell raced in the 1-mile run and took 29th out of 82 total runners with a time of 5:33.01. Elin Latta from San Antonio, Texas won the event with a meet-record time of 4:51.19 where the other top-five finishers also beat the previous record.
Friday morning, Therrell came back and used a personal-record time in the 800-meter run to finish 20th out of 77 runners with a time of 2:24.12. Grace Hill from Chino Hills, California won the race in 2:11.74.
Therrell’s previous best 800-meter time of 2:28.58, which secured 10th at the state indoor track championships, ranked fourth in Bayside Academy’s record book on athletic.net. Her new best time would sit second overall behind only Annie Midyett, a recently announced AHSAA North-South All-Star.
In her first varsity action of the year on the cross country course, Therrell scored points at the state meet on Nov. 11, 2023, with a 5k time of 19:52.12 for 14th overall. That time also sits eighth in the Admirals’ record books and her 3k time of 12:26.39 is currently fifth.
