The Bankhead Tunnel will undergo closure next week starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, until Friday afternoon, Feb. 23, to facilitate the ongoing installation of a new generator and as part of the tunnel’s electrical upgrades according to a news release from the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes utilizing the Wallace Tunnel and/or the Africatown Bridge and I-65 for their commute across the bay.
The release stated ALDOT aims to expedite the generator upgrade, potentially reopening the tunnel ahead of the designated timeframe.
Originally opened to traffic in 1941, the Bankhead Tunnel is undergoing essential electrical upgrades, with the replacement of the generator being the initial phase, followed by lighting upgrades within the tunnel.
Additionally, ALDOT has launched ALDOTNews.com, an online news hub providing information on road projects, traffic conditions and highway safety. The platform features articles on current developments across ALDOT's five statewide regions, along with a Projects & Programs link directing readers to a map detailing active road projects in their area.
