The newest class of the Baldwin Humane Society’s Teen Animal Advocate Program has been selected from a pool of Baldwin County high school students.
The need to nurture the next generation of nonprofit volunteers and operators is at the core of the program. It is open to Baldwin County students in grades 11 and 12.
“The selected students spend a whole year with us learning about nonprofit work, volunteering, and we introduce them to professionals in the field,” said Abby Pruet, executive director at Baldwin Humane Society. “The program's purpose is to try to generate interest in the younger people and offer almost like an internship.”
In addition to the 10 students selected for the 2022 Teen Animal Advocate Program, the Humane Society welcomed four returning Teen Animal Advocates as program mentors for this year’s group.
Students were selected from a competitive pool of applicants from across the county. The application process involved a questionnaire, essay writing and interviews with representatives from the Humane Society.
The Animal Advocates have a busy year ahead. They will represent the Baldwin Humane Society through volunteering, attending monthly seminars and create a community-based project to promote animal welfare and the Baldwin Humane Society.
