FOLEY, Ala. - National MVP awards. State championships. SEC Championships. National Championships.

Those are just a few of the accomplishments made by Baldwin County athletes in 2013.

Baldwin County has always produced great athletic talent and Monday’s BCS title game will be a showcase of some of that talent.

In February Fairhope football standout Nate Andrews picked Florida State on National Signing Day in the high school’s black box theater. Little did anyone know just a few months later Andrews would be a major player in the Seminoles’ run to the BCS National Championship game as a true freshman. Andrews has snagged four interceptions, including one for a touchdown, for the FSU defense during the team’s march to the title game.

When Andrews and the Seminoles line up on Monday, they will do so against the Auburn Tigers, another team with Baldwin County connections.

Auburn’s starting center is Reese Dismukes, a Spanish Fort graduate. Fairhope’s Robert Leff and Spanish Fort’s Daniel Pond are also on the Auburn roster as the Tigers seek their second national championship since 2010.

The BCS National Championship game has been kind to Baldwin County athletes in the past with Foley’s D.J. Fluker, Robert Lester and Julio Jones and Daphne’s T.J. Yeldon winning titles with the Alabama Crimson Tide in the last few years.

Not only did Lester and Fluker win national championships while at Alabama, the pair will also make their NFL playoff debuts this month. Lester is a rookie safety for the 12-4 NFC South Champion Carolina Panthers, who will host an NFC divisional playoff game Jan. 12. Lester has 21 tackles and three interceptions for the Panthers. Fluker is a rookie tackle for the San Diego Chargers, who finished 9-7 and visit BCHS graduate Wallace Gilberry and the Cincinnati Bengals Saturday at 12:05 p.m.
