Alabama Arise and Alabama Values recently announced the launch of the Think Big Alabama: Empowering Voices for Change program.

The Think Big Alabama program is a four-part advocacy training program aimed at empowering underserved and underrepresented communities in Alabama, according to a news release. The program, scheduled to run July 13-Aug. 24, will provide essential skills in media, public policy and grassroots organizing to 20 participants. BIPOC Alabamians are strongly encouraged to apply.

Aligned with the missions of both Alabama Arise and Alabama Values, the program seeks to equip communities with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to address pressing issues impacting their lives. The program will translate research findings from the Think Big learning community into actionable steps for advocacy and change.

"Through this collaboration, we are demystifying the legislative process and providing essential advocacy skills to people who want to improve their communities' well-being and make Alabama a better, more inclusive place for everyone," said Presdelane Harris, organizing director of Alabama Arise, in the release. "Our goal is to engage Alabamians to become active participants in shaping the policies that affect their lives."

Alabama Arise, a statewide, member-led organization dedicated to advancing public policies for the betterment of marginalized Alabamians, brings its expertise in policy advocacy and community engagement to this initiative.

The program will feature a blend of in-person and virtual sessions covering narrative building, grassroots organizing, policy advocacy and media strategies. Participants will kick off with foundational insights into the interplay between media, policy and grassroots organizing, fostering collaboration and community engagement.

Alabama Values will contribute expertise in narrative and messaging for social change, aiding participants in crafting compelling stories that drive action. Meanwhile, Alabama Arise will offer practical tools and strategies for navigating the legislative landscape and advocating for meaningful policy changes.
Sessions will delve into place-based storytelling, crafting compelling narratives, utilizing media platforms for advocacy, effective grassroots organizing strategies and policy narratives. Participants will conclude the program by finalizing individual or group action plans to address specific state or local issues, equipped with strategies for ongoing community involvement and impact.

"Think Big Alabama is more than a training program; it's a movement to empower marginalized communities and amplify their voices in public policy debates," said Anneshia Hardy, executive director of Alabama Values. "By equipping participants with the necessary tools and knowledge, we aim to create a lasting impact on the state and community levels."

Elaine Mejia, executive director of the Think Big Alliance, expressed eagerness at the initiative, stating, "The Think Big Alliance is thrilled to support this exciting initiative. Working together across issues to create and deploy transformational narratives is how we plant the seeds for the big wins that will make the most difference in people's lives."
